ROMEOVILLE - Lewis sophomore left-hander Jon Guzzo pitched brilliantly in game one of Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader but was out-dueled by Bellarmine's Ryan Morrison 1-0.

In the nightcap, Bellarmine scored three runs in the first two innings and held on for a 4-2 win.

Guzzo (1-4), who took over the team ERA lead (2.90), went the seven-inning distance and allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out five. Morrison (5-2) also went all the way, fanning seven and yielding three hits and no walks.

In game two, Lewis (3-25, 2-18 GLVC) scored its first run in the third inning. Brandon Niewinski had an infield hit, advanced to third on Jim Gabriel (Orland Park, Ill./Providence)'s two-out single and scored on Guzzo's single.

After Bellarmine (16-11, 11-8 GLVC) added a run in the fifth, the Flyers scored again in the eighth. With two outs, Lewis loaded the bases on singles by Billy Duffy, Ryan Duran and Niewinski, and Duffy scored on a wild pitch.

The Flyers out-hit the Knights 11-10. Gabriel was 3-for-5, and Duffy and Niewinski each had two hits.

Jon Crettol (0-4) absorbed the loss. Lewis received solid relief pitching from Adam Stabosz (four innings, no runs, two hits, one walk) and Tommy Rawski (one inning, no hits).

Matt DeMasters (1-0) registered the win, pitching two scoreless relief innings after starter Chris Kern lasted just three innings. Alex Kuebbing pitched the ninth and collected his fourth save.

The Flyers travel to Indianapolis on Wednesday for a GLVC doubleheader.
