Game 2 Box Score
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Senior Day started on a sour note for the Lewis Flyers (32-10, 16-6) as they suffered a heart-breaking 7-4, 12-inning loss in the opener of a conference doubleheader with Northern Kentucky (31-17, 11-9) on Sunday afternoon, but the Flyers rebounded in the nightcap with their best run-scoring effort in 10 years, winning 18-6 in five innings.
The Flyers scored seven runs in the second, five in third and six more in the fourth of game two, pounding out a total of 13 hits. It was the most runs in a single game by the Flyers since an 18-0 win over Trinity Christian on March 26, 1996.
Mallory Paine led the way for the Flyers in the win, going 3-for-3 with a single, an RBI double and a three-run home run. She collected her fifth RBI of the game with a base-loaded walk in the fourth inning.
Kelly Dianis made it back-to-back home runs for Lewis in the seven-run second when she smacked a line drive shot over the fence in center field after Paine hit her three-run bomb.
Robin Martz went 3-for-3 with three RBI. Lisa Gartland was 2-for-3 with a triple, and Courtney Lyons knocked in two runs with a single to center in the fourth.
Gartland (6-0) picked up the win in the circle, pitching 3 1/3 innings with eight hits and three earned runs. Lyons pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and no runs.
In game one, a Christina Willis two-out double down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth inning put the Flyers in front 4-3. Julie Wingerter (12-4) retired the first two batters in the seventh, but then gave up a game-tying home run to Heather Contor.
The Flyers had runners on second and third with two out in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't bring home the game-winning run.
The score remained tied until the top of the 12th when, with two out, Shatona Campbell tagged Wingerter for a solo shot to left field. Wingerter walked the next batter and then gave up a two-run blast to Jenny Weis.
A leadoff double by Martz in the bottom of the 11th followed by an intentional walk to Paine ended up as the Flyers' best chance to score in extra innings, but the two runners were left stranded.
The Flyers scored first in game one thanks to a three-run second inning that saw an RBI single from Ashley LeGrand and a two-run home run from Amy Yusko.
The Flyers held the 3-0 advantage until the fifth inning when Northern Kentucky rallied for three runs. Katybeth Coode hit a two-run homer and Contor added an RBI single.
The Flyers return to action on Tuesday when they host Saint Xavier in a doubleheader beginning at 3 pm.
