The Lewis Flyers pounded out 21 hits and scored 16 runs in a 9-1 (5 innings) and 7-1 doubleheader sweep of No. 15 Missouri-Rolla, Sunday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
For a third consecutive game, the Flyers (24-6, 10-2) won with a home run, as Mallory Paine hit a solo shot with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning of the opener for the run-rule victory.
After Missouri-Rolla (25-7, 8-6) tallied a first-inning run in Game 2, Kristy Vanek put Lewis up for good with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the frame.
Kelly Dianis padded Lewis' advantage when she belted a grand slam, her second home run in as many days, in the bottom of the second inning. Kalynn Russell singled to center field in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 2 for the Flyers' seventh run.
Julie Wingerter (10-1) picked up the win in the first game, her fourth of the week, as she tossed five innings with seven hits, four strikeouts, two walks and one earned run.
Courtney Lyons (7-4) went the distance in Game 2, allowing just two hits while striking out three batters. She gave up a walk and an RBI single in the first inning and then held the Lady Miners to two walks and an infield hit the rest of the way.
The Flyers scored early and often in the first game, racking up four runs in the first inning and three more in the second. A Lisa Gartland RBI single in the bottom of the fourth scored the Flyers' eighth run, and Paine ended it with her homer in the fifth.
Robin Martz was a combined 5-for-8 in both games, including a double and four runs. Dianis finished 3-for-6 with three runs and four RBI, and Vanek was 3-for-6 with a run and two RBI.
Gartland and Paine each tallied two hits with two RBI, and Beth Shelus tallied a double.
The Flyers resume play on Friday when they travel to face Southern Illinois Edwardsville for a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 pm.
