May 12, 2006

Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Lewis pitchers Julie Wingerter and Courtney Lyons limited Southern Illinois Edwardsville to just four hits, but the Cougars still escaped with a 1-0 win, Friday afternoon in an NCAA Regional elimination game.

Wingerter (14-8) pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings before being lifted in the sixth with runners on the corners and only one out. Lyons came in and gave up a double to the first batter she faced, allowing SIUE to score its only run, but then held the Cougars hitless the rest of the way.

SIUE ace Sabra McCune (28-7) picked up her fourth win of the season against the Flyers, allowing five hits while striking out four to notch the complete-game shutout. McCune didn't allow a single Flyer to get past second base the entire game.

Robin Martz was stranded at second in the first inning after leading off with a double, and Wingerter, in as a pinch-runner for Shannon Roney, was left standing at second in the fifth after an infield single and a sacrifice bunt.

Martz, playing in the final game of her collegiate career, finished the afternoon 2-for-3.

Lewis finished the season 39-15, winning 10 more games than last season and marking the 11th consecutive year of 29 or more wins. The NCAA Regional appearance was the seventh in program history.
