Lewis overcame a stubborn Bellarmine team to notch a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer victory Friday afternoon.
The Flyers, ranked No. 15 nationally and No. 2 in the Great Lakes Region, improved to 9-2 overall and 7-2 in the GLVC. Lewis has not allowed a goal in its five home games this year.
Leading scorer Cory Mastey provided the only goal, his seventh, at 71:07, and Ryan Doody tallied his first assist of the year. Doody perfectly delivered a long cross from the left side, and Mastey narrowly out-jumped a defender and headed the ball past Bellarmine goalkeeper Justin Welply.
Bellarmine (5-6, 3-5 GLVC) recorded five shots on goal, but Flyer netminder Anthony Szymel stopped them all to register his fifth shutout.
The victory, coupled with Wisconsin-Parkside's 1-0 loss to Northern Kentucky, allowed Lewis to move up a spot to second place in the GLVC standings behind Drury. It also put the Flyers one win away from a 15th consecutive season with at least 10 victories and left Evan Fiffles one win shy of 200 as Lewis head coach.
The Flyers host Northern Kentucky Sunday at noon.
