A pair of goals by Lewis University junior Cory Mastey helped the surging Flyers to a 5-1 win over Southern Indiana, Sunday afternoon in a Great Lake Valley Conference contest.
The Flyers improved to 10-4 (6-4 GLVC) and moved up to seventh in the conference standings, while the Screaming Eagles fell to 4-9-1 (2-7 GLVC). The GLVC's top eight teams qualify for the conference tournament at the end of the regular season.
After erupting for eight goals in a win over Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday, the Flyers' offense stayed red hot on Sunday, scoring four times before Southern Indiana got on the board.
Junior Jorge De Jesus put Lewis up 1-0 with his fourth goal of the season - and third of the week - at 12:31. Sophomore Nestor Hernandez added the assist.
Freshman Armin Vrebac notched his second marker of the week to make it 2-0 Lewis at 40:31. Junior goalkeeper Anthony Szymel was credited with the assist.
In the second half, Mastey added his team-leading ninth and 10th goals of the season at 53:49 and 57:12. His first tally was unassisted, and the second was on a penalty kick.
Hernandez registered the Flyers' fifth goal, scoring with an assist from De Jesus at 85:38.
Szymel held the Screaming Eagles scoreless for 71:14, making four saves before being relieved by junior Nick Veselka. Szymel has now gone 168:03 without allowing a goal.
Southern Indiana's lone tally came at 77:22.
The Flyers led in total shots (19-15) and corner kicks (7-4), and they were whistled for seven more fouls than Southern Indiana.
The Flyers put their three-game winning streak on the line on Friday, hosting Drury at 2:30 p.m.
