Junior goal keeper Anthony Szymel provided a shutout while junior Cory Mastey and sophomore Nestor Hernandez supplied the scoring for No. 15 Lewis in a 2-0 GLVC semifinal win over Indianapolis Friday afternoon on the campus of Northern Kentucky.
The Flyers (16-4) won for a ninth consecutive game and advanced to the conference championship game for the fourth time in the last seven seasons.
Lewis busted the 0-0 stalemate with Indianapolis (11-6-5) at 41:55 when Cory Mastey took a cross from Hernandez and booted it in from 19-yards away for his team-leading 13th goal of the season.
Hernandez made it 2-0 when he grabbed a through pass from junior Jorge De Jesus and buried from six yards out. The goal, which came at 54:28, was Hernandez's ninth of the season.
Szymel stopped a season-best seven shots en route to his fifth shutout of the season.
The Greyhounds out-shot the Flyers 15-9 and held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. Lewis had 16 fouls compared to 14 by Indianapolis.
Lewis will face tournament host and top seed Northern Kentucky in the conference championship. The Norse defeated Rockhurst 2-1 in semifinal action Friday evening to advance to the final. They are ranked No. 1 in the nation and are 20-0 this season. Game time for Sunday's conference championship is 12:00 p.m. CST.
Lewis' last conference championship came in 2003 when the Flyers topped SIU Edwardsville 3-1 in the final. The Cougars had won 15 straight entering that contest. Northern Kentucky and Lewis last squared off on Sept. 7. The home-standing Norse earned a 1-0 victory.
