Box Score
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Four Flyers recorded double-digit kills in the Flyers' 30-26, 32-30, 23-30, 34-32 victory over No. 23 Northern Kentucky at Neil Carey Arena in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match. Last Saturday the Flyers handed No. 20 Indianapolis their only conference loss of the season.
Sophomore Stephanie Sagat recorded a match-high 23 kills, one short of the career-high she set in Lewis' previous victory at Northern Kentucky earlier this season. Sagat added 17 kills for her 14th kill-dig double-double of the season. She also recorded two aces, three block assists and a solo block. Sagat has 406 kills on the season, second best in the rally scoring era. Katie Gilman holds the rally scoring era Lewis record with 466 in 2002.
Senior Andrea Morrone recorded 63 assist, 15 digs and eight kills.
Sophomore Sara deBuhr recorded career-highs in kills with 19 and blocks with nine (eight assisted, one solo).
Sophomore Kim Richards added 12 kills. Freshman Lauren Seliga had 11 kills and 13 digs.
Freshman Ashlee Lindish notched a match-high 24 digs.
Thanks to five kills by deBuhr in the opening game, the Flyers held off a late charge by the Norse to take game one.
Game two was back-and-forth until the Norse took a 29-26 lead. With Lewis one point away from losing game two, the Flyers recorded three straight points to tie the game at 29. After a kill by Northern Kentucky's Tristen Dye, the Flyers were again within one point of falling. But a service error and an attack error by the Norse's Liz Holmes moved the score to 31-30 in favor of the Flyers. The Flyers took the game on an error by Northern Kentucky's Brittany Dixon.
With the match on the line, the Norse responded by out-hitting the Flyers .372 to .237 to take the third game.
In game four the Norse jumped out to a four-point lead but the Flyers fought back to tie the match at 14. With the score tied at 19 the Flyers went on a 5-2 run and to take a 24-21 advantage. Six points from defeat, the Norse responded with an 8-3 run of their own to make the score 29-27. Again, with the game on the line the Flyers responded with kills by Morrone and Seliga to tie the game at 29. After fending off two Norse game-points, and the Norse preventing a match-point of the Flyers, the Flyers took a 33-32 lead on a kill by Sagat. A Northern Kentucky timeout couldn't stop the Flyers, as it was Sagat again on the match-point kill.
The Flyers recorded 84 digs to Northern Kentucky's 83. Lewis out-hit (.243-.219) and out-blocked (11-8) Northern Kentucky. Lewis has out-blocked 10 of their last 12 opponents.
Northern Kentucky's Chelsea Clark had a team-high 17 digs and four others recorded double-digits digs for the Norse. Holmes had a team-high 19 kills.
Lewis finishes the regular season 27-3 (17-2 GLVC), the most single-season wins during the rally scoring era and the most victories since the 1989 team went 27-10.
The Flyers 11th straight victory is their second longest win-streak in school history. It is bested only by the 17 straight wins the 2002 squad put together.
The Flyers finish the regular season in second place in the GLVC East Division. As the No. 2 seed from the East the Flyers will play UMSL in the first of the GLVC Tournament at noon ET on Friday. The 2007 GLVC Tournament is being held on the campus of the University of Indianapolis next Friday through Sunday.
