Junior Jason Genova hit 4-of-5 from 3-point range on his way to a team-best 20 points as the Lewis Flyers routed Trinity Christian 79-57, Tuesday evening in the Flyers' home opener at Neil Carey Arena.
Genova was one of 10 different Flyers to score in the game. He went 7-of-12 from the field and collected two rebounds and two steals. Senior Stephan Bolt scored 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting. He also added three rebounds and two assists. Both starters played just over 20 minutes in the game.
Senior Matthew Marino tallied nine points with five assists. Junior Ryan Sharp contributed nine points, hitting two 3-pointers, and he added a career-best three steals. Freshman Lonnie Lawrence, starting for the first time, pulled down a team-best seven rebounds and scored seven points. He also had three steals, two assists and one block.
The Flyers ran out to a 12-2 lead to start the game, only to see that lead completely evaporate midway through the first half. Trinity Christian tied the game 12-12 at 11:32 of the first, but never took the lead.
Sharp hit his first trey of the game to bust the tie, and the Flyers quickly rebuilt their lead from there, going up by as many as 11 before heading to halftime up by 42-33.
Lewis outscored Trinity Christian 27-6 to open the second half to build a 32-point lead before settling for the 22-point win.
The Flyers shot 49.2 percent for the game, including a season-best 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from 3-point range. Each team pulled down 30 rebounds. Lewis won the turnover battle by committing 11 to Trinity Christian's 23. The Flyers set a season high with 12 steals.
Senior Kurt Gruppen led a group of three Trinity Christian Trolls to score in double figures with a game-high 21 points.
The Flyers return to action on Saturday, hosting Olivet Nazarene at 3 pm.
