Box Score
Carrollton, Ga. -
From both a weather and performance standpoint, it was a less than ideal start to the 2007 season for the Lewis University softball team.
Opening the first of two games in sub-freezing temperatures at the University West Georgia Invitational, the Flyers lost 4-0 to West Alabama and 8-0 (five innings) to North Alabama.
Julie Wingerter (0-1) took the loss in the first game, while Courtney Lyons (0-1) was on the hook for game two.
Freshman Jenna Howard worked five scoreless innings in relief of Wingerter in game one, striking out four batters. She kept the score at 2-0 until the final inning when she gave up a two-run home run.
Game two was scoreless after one inning, but two home runs helped North Alabama score seven times in the second inning to put the game out of reach.
The Flyers collected six hits for the day. Ashley LeGrand had a pair of singles. Kristy Vanek, Lisa Gartland, Mallory Paine and Lyons each recorded a hit.
The Flyers look to rebound on Saturday, facing Columbus State at 1 pm, tournament-host West Georgia at 3 pm and Alabama-Huntsville at 7 pm.
