ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Junior left-hander Jon Guzzo did not allow an earned run in the opener, and Lewis tied its season-high run output in game two, but Missouri-Rolla posted a 1-0, 12-6 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep Saturday at Brennan Field.
Guzzo (0-5), who lowered his ERA to a team-best 1.96, went the seven-inning distance in game one. He allowed five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out six.
Missouri-Rolla scored the game's only run in the fourth, and that was enough for right-hander Brandon Cogan (2-1). Cogan went the route and yielded five hits and one walk while fanning eight.
Joe Musolino had two hits for the Flyers.
In the nightcap, Missouri-Rolla (11-14, 4-11 GLVC) scored single runs in the first and second and added four in the third. Lewis (4-21, 3-13 GLVC) countered with three-run outbursts in the first and third.
In the Flyer first, Musolino singled with one out, stole second and scored on a Billy Duffy single. Mike Smith singled, and Ryan Duran delivered a two-out, two-run double that gave Lewis a 3-1 lead.
Musolino led off the third with his fourth hit of the day. Singles by Duffy and Smith loaded the bases with nobody out, and Bryan Druktenis brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.
Following a walk to Duran that reloaded the bases, the Flyers tallied two more two-out runs when Tim Bingham was hit by a pitch and Chris Brigham walked.
Unfortunately, Missouri-Rolla received stellar work from its bullpen and kept Lewis off the board the rest of the way. The Miners scored three times in the fourth and added one insurance run in the sixth and two more in the eighth.
Duffy collected three hits for the Flyers, who host Missouri-Rolla in the series finale Sunday at noon.
