March 8, 2007

Box Score

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Lewis concluded its Florida trip Thursday with a 7-2 win over Stonehill and a 3-1 victory over Georgian Court. The Flyers finished 10-0 on the week-long trip, going undefeated for the first time in the 21 years the team has competed at the Rebel Spring Games.

Julie Wingerter (2-1) pitched the Flyers to victory against Stonehill. The sophomore hurler struck out nine batters, allowing just two hits through the first six innings.

The Lewis offense pounded out 10 hits in the win, scoring once in the first, three times in the third, once in the fourth and two more times in the sixth.

Christina Willis hit her first career home run in the fourth inning. The Stonehill outfield was playing shallow in anticipation of a slap attempt by Willis. Instead, Willis took a full cut a shot the ball over the left fielder's head. The ball rolled all the way to the fence, and Willis raced home for the inside-the-park home run.

Other top performers for the Lewis offense included Carla Musillo, Beth Shelus and Jessica Beck. Musillo had two hits. Shelus had a hit, three runs and three stolen bases. Beck pounded a triple in sixth inning, kick-starting a two-run rally.

Against Georgian Court, the Flyers tallied five hits and three runs in the first inning and were held scoreless the rest of the way.

Kristy Vanek collected a two-RBI dingle during the three-run first. Willis and Lisa Gartland each had two of Lewis 10 total hits in the game.

Gartland (2-1) earned the win in the circle. She pitched 4 and 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and just the one run. Jenna Howard came on to finish the final 2 1/3 and picked up her second save of the week.

The Flyers (11-4) are scheduled to play again on March 17, as Lewis hosts the Great Lakes Region mini-showdown.
