ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
Jon Guzzo pitched eight innings of three-hit ball in the opener, and Ryan McManaman collected four hits and three RBI on the day in the Lewis University baseball team's doubleheader loss to Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent Southern Indiana Sunday at Brennan Field.
Southern Indiana (28-11, 16-7 GLVC) won the nine-inning opener 3-1. The Screaming Eagles completed the sweep with a 7-4 triumph in game two, a seven-inning non-conference contest.
Guzzo, who struck out five and lowered his ERA to 3.20, yielded a run in each of the first two innings but blanked USI during the remainder of his eight-inning stint.
After emerging from a fourth-inning jam unscathed following a walk and a single, the junior left-hander faced the minimum over the next four innings. USI's only baserunner during that span drew a leadoff walk in the seventh but was erased on a double play.
The Flyers (4-31, 3-21 GLVC) tallied their only run in the third. McManaman doubled with one out, moved to third on Brian Clancy (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville)'s ground ball to second and scored on Chris Brigham (Bolingbrook, Ill./Romeoville)'s infield single.
Southern Indiana tacked on an insurance run in the ninth.
McManaman was 3-for-3 including two doubles, and Billy Duffy had a double in his 2-for-4 effort.
With the help of three unearned runs, USI jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings of the nightcap.
The Flyers finally broke through in the sixth, scoring three times. A hit batsman and two walks loaded the bases for McManaman, who delivered a two-out, bases-clearing double to left center.
USI bounced back with two runs in the seventh to make Lewis' comeback effort a taller task. Duffy singled and later scored on Clancy's two-out infield hit. An error put the tying run on before USI reliever Aaron Schmitt recorded the final out.
Duffy and Mike Smith were 2-for-4 and Ryan Duran was 2-for-3.
Lewis travels to Rensselaer, Ind., on Tuesday to take on Saint Joseph's in a GLVC twinbill starting at noon.
