The Lewis Flyers started the 2007 season with an offensive explosion, winning 6-2 over the previously unbeaten Upper Iowa Peacocks on Wednesday afternoon at the Lewis Soccer Field. After falling behind by two goals in the first half, the Flyers scored six unanswered to earn the victory. The six goals represented Lewis' largest offensive performance since a 9-0 win over Dominican in 2001.
The Peacocks opened a 2-0 lead with goals from Lauren Smith (16:18) minute and Amy Campbell (26:08).
Lewis cut the Peacock's lead in half on an Allison Wilkerson header off of a perfectly placed Courtney Kettle corner at 40:15.
The junior Kettle tied the game on a penalty kick at 59:30. Sophomore Amy Foran gave Lewis the lead with her first colligate goal on a pass from Ashley Gaurke at 66:55. Three minutes later it was Foran again, scoring unassisted to give the Flyers a two-goal cushion.
Kettle added her second goal of the game (unassisted) at 74:19. It was the second two-goal game of her collegiate career. She last scored twice in a game when the Flyers beat Upper Iowa on October 18, 2006.
Junior Kari Huizinga scored the Flyers sixth goal, the first of her career, at 88:57, with an assist from junior Caitlin Kelly.
Freshman keeper Andrea Iossi recorded three saves to notch first career win.
The Flyers held a 27 to 8 advantage in shots and an eight to one advantage in corner kicks.
The Flyers' win was the first of Chris Koenig's head-coaching career.
The Peacocks fell to 2-1 with the loss.
The Flyers take to the field again on Saturday when they host Northwood University at noon.
