Junior Cory Mastey (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew)'s fifth and sixth goals of the season highlighted what was a Lewis offensive onslaught in an 8-0 rout of Upper Iowa, Wednesday afternoon at the Lewis Soccer Field.
The No. 25 Flyers improved to 3-0, while Upper Iowa slipped to 2-1. Lewis scored eight goals in a game for the first time since beating Upper Iowa 8-2 on August 29, 2004.
Mastey has now scored two goals in each of the Flyers three games this season. Against Upper Iowa he also added his second assist of the season, giving him a team-best 14 points for the year.
Sophomore Nestor Hernandez opened the scoring for Lewis when he took a quick feed from Mastey out in front of the goal and drove it past Upper Iowa keeper Andy Youde (0-3) at 19:19.
It was all the offense Lewis needed, as junior goalkeeper Anthony Szymel (3-0) kept the Peacocks off the board the entire first half. Szymel gave way to junior Nick Veselka in the second half, who stopped three shots to preserve the shutout.
Freshman Mardoche Beya made it 2-0 Flyers with his first collegiate goal when he knocked in a deflection at 33:01. Sophomore Mark Switalski fired the first shot in the sequence, and was credited with the assist.
Mastey scored Lewis' third goal, with an assist from junior Jorge De Jesus, blasting a 10-yard shot into the top right corner of the net at 47:05. De Jesus found the back of the net 10 minutes later, beating a defender and scoring unassisted.
Lewis took a 5-0 lead with Mastey's second goal of the game at 60:43. Junior Craig McIntosh (unassisted) and sophomore Brandon McIntire (Switalski) each notched their first goal of the season at 66:11 and 78:29, respectively. Junior Chris Buckowski (Beya) added his first tally of the year at 78:29.
The Flyers fired 39 shots, including 20 on goal, while limiting the Peacocks to eight shots with four on goal. Each team had six corner kicks. Lewis committed 13 fouls to Upper Iowa's seven. Upper Iowa landed four yellow cards. Lewis had one.
The Flyers return to action on Saturday, hosting Northwood at 2:30 p.m.
