The Lewis Flyers were edged 3-1 (30-28, 28-30, 30-26, 30-22) by No. 3 Penn State on Friday night in their season opener.
The Nittany Lions took a 10-5 lead in game one but the Flyers rallied to tie the game at 28 on kills by juniors Mike Iandolo and Jared Dayton. However Penn State would take the next two points and the game.
Penn State was leading 22-19 in game two when the Flyers went on a 5-0 run to take a two point advantage. The Nittany Lions tied it at 25 but when Lewis followed with two straight points, highlighted by a service ace by junior Alex Vigansky, Penn State was forced to call a time out. Two kills by junior Drew Pickering and one by junior Billy Sahagian gave game two to the Flyers.
Trailing 21-17 in game three, the Flyers used a 3-0 run to get within one point of the Nittany Lions at 21-20. Penn State regrouped and pulled away with a 5-2 run to take game three. With the Nittany Lions holding a slight 18-17 lead they pulled away with a 4-0 run.
Three Flyers reached double figures in kills. Dayton had a match high 21 kills with nine digs. Pickering notched 13 kills and junior David Kelnhofer added 11. Iandolo had 4 assists. Nick Perakes recorded a match high 13 digs. For Penn State, Max Holt had 14 kills, Matt Anderson tallied 13 and Jay Stauffer recorded 10. The Nittany Lions out-hit the Flyers .254 to .173 and led a slight edge in blocks (13.5 to 12.0).
The Nittany Lions improved to 4-0. The Flyers fell to 0-1 and will play at St. Francis (Pa.) tomorrow night.
