Flyers Sweep St. Francis

LORETTO, Pa. - The Flyers moved to 1-1 with a 3-0 (30-21, 32-30, 30-26) victory over St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday evening.

The Flyers fell behind 8-5 in game one but fought back to tie the game at 11. The Flyers held a slim 15-14 lead but pulled away with a 7-1 run. Junior Drew Pickering notched an ace to make the score 25-17 and forced St. Francis to call a timeout. The Flyers cruised to the nine-point victory.

Game two was similar to the first with the Red Flash taking an early 13-8 lead. Again the Flyers rallied back, eventually taking their first lead of the game at 19-18 on a kill by junior Billy Sahagian. Lewis opened a two point lead at 28-26 but the Red Flash scored the next three points and gave themselves game point. However, a kill by junior Alex Vigansky knotted the game at 29. After the Red Flash scored the next point Lewis took three straight to take the game. Senior Jared Dayton scored the 29th point and junior David Kelnhofer added the 30th. It was Dayton once again on game point, finishing the Red Flash with an ace.

It was back and forth early in game three but a 12-4 run by the Flyers helped Lewis pull away from the Red Flash. Vigansky scored match point on a kill assisted by junior Mike Iandolo.

Iandolo finished with a game high 34 assists. Kelnhofer recorded 11 kills while Pickering added 10. Junior Nick Perakes tallied six digs. The Flyers out-hit (.256 to .167) and out-blocked (8.5 to 7.0) St. Francis.

The Flyers face Lees-McRae on Friday at 7 p.m. in Lewis' home opener. On Saturday No. 1 BYU makes their first ever visit to Neil Carey Arena at 7 p.m.
