The Flyers battled No. 1 BYU to five games but in the end the Cougars pulled out a 3-2 (23-30, 30-18, 26-30, 30-20, 15-13) non-conference victory in front of a raucous Neil Carey Arena crowd.
The Flyers came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. Senior Jared Dayton led the charge, notching six kills in the opening game. The Flyers recorded 19 kills in the game.
Game two was just the opposite for the Flyers, with BYU turning a 9-7 lead into a 16-9 advantage with a 7-2 run.
With the Flyers leading 6-5 in game three they took control with a kill by Dayton, a solo block by sophomore Mike Iandolo, an ace from junior David Kelnhofer and another solo block this time from junior Drew Pickering. The Flyers would never relinquish the lead despite a late run by BYU to get within two at 26-24.
Game four was similar to game two, with the Cougars taking an early 16-9 lead and cruising to the victory.
The Flyers led for most of the decisive game five. With the crowd on their feet the entire way, Lewis took a 5-3 lead on a kill by Pickering and an error by BYU's Russel Holmes. The Flyers and Cougars traded points for what seemed like an eternity till the Cougars scored the final four points of the match to turn a 13-11 Flyers lead into a 15-13 BYU victory.
The Flyers had five players reach double-digit kills. Junior Alex Vigansky and Dayton each had 15 with Dayton adding seven digs. Vigansky had only four errors and hit .458 for the match. Pickering had 14 kills with just five errors to hit .300. He also added five digs. Junior Billy Sahagian had 11 kills and Kelnhofer notched 10 with two solo blocks and two block assists. Iandolo notched 51 assists, but seemed to be everywhere on the court, adding five digs, two solo blocks and two kills. Junior Nick Perakes had a match high 12 digs.
For BYU Ivan Perez had a match high 20 kills. The Flyers fall to 2-2 while BYU moved to 4-0.
The Flyers host MSOE at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Neil Carey Arena.
