Late Run Not Enough To Defeat Greyhounds

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - A late Lewis comeback wasn't enough as undefeated Indianapolis topped the Flyers with a 61-51 victory at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game.

The Greyhounds built a 21-point lead with 9:34 remaining but the Flyers went on a 13-0 run to cut the lead to eight at 44-52 with 5:55 remaining. Freshman Jenny Turpel scored eight points during this stretch to get the Flyers back in the game. Sophomore Lauresha Hawkins added a layup and sophomore Kaci Baird hit a trey to spark the Flyers during the run. However the Greyhounds responded with a 7-0 run to pull away down the stretch.

The Flyers defense forced 20 Greyhounds turnovers while committing a season low 10. Lewis held the Greyhounds to 61 points, their lowest output of the season and 13 points under their season average of 74.3 per game. Karla Mast entered the game as the GLVC's second leading scorer with 20.0 points per game but was limited to 13 by the Flyers. Samantha Meissel scored 15 points while Jessica Canary and Isabell Rhenwrick added ten for Indianapolis. The Greyhounds made 21-of-25 free throws while the Flyers connected on 7-of-12.

In addition to 15 points, five rebounds and two steals Turpel recorded four blocks for the third time this season. Hawkins totaled 10 points and three assists. Baird added nine points, five rebounds and two blocks. Junior Kelly Dianis had five points, five rebounds and tied a career high with four steals.

Indianapolis improved to 11-0 (4-0 GLVC) while the Flyers fell to 6-4 (3-1 GLVC). Lewis continues GLVC play next week at Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday evening and at Southern Indiana on Saturday afternoon.
