Lewis Cross Country Goes To Battle At SIU-Edwardsville Border Wars

Edwardsville, Ill. – Lewis University sophomore Kathryn Hague (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Assisi) turned in a seventh place finish of 18:49.85 to help the Flyers take ninth-place overall at the 5K Border War Cross Country Championship, hosted by SIU Edwardsville on Saturday morning.

   Missouri Southern won the women’s title with 71 points, followed by Pittsburg State (88), Truman State (113), Washington (132), Bellarmine (159), SIU Edwardsville (171), Central Missouri (176), Paradise Valley C.C. (184), Lewis (197), William Woods (212), Emporia State (262), Missouri S&T (326), Fontbonne (398), Maryville (436), Kentucky Wesleyan (442) and Webster (454).

   Hague’s teammate, senior Becky Herbert (Tinley Park, Ill.) was close behind, as she finished 14th overall, crossing the finish line in 19:10.93. Flyers sophomore Pierra Sobodas (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet Township) finished 49th overall (20:19.88), followed by freshman Ashley Lucas (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward) who placed 72nd overall with a mark of 20:57.50 and freshman Julie Jarrett (Champaign, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) who had a time of 21:23.63, good for 85th place.  

   Missouri Southern’s Kimi Shank won the overall title with a time of 18:01.96, followed by SIU Edwardsville’s Kayla Brown (18:20.10), Truman State’s Danna Kelly (18:30.24), Missouri Southern’s Kara Eckard (18:38.99) and Pittsburg State’s Erica Ogle (18:41.12).

   On the men’s side, Lewis sophomore Andy Lepkowski (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) led the Flyers with a 13th place finish of 26:51.07 in the 8K race. Lepkowski was
followed by senior Patrick Walsh (Harwood Heights, Ill.), who placed 58th overall with a time of 27:51.12. Lewis freshman Scott Tanis (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) claimed 63rd place with a time of 27:54.50, followed by a 71st place mark of 28:04.36 by classmate Rocky Medero (River Grove, Ill./Guerin Prep). Lewis sophomore Seth Schultz (Elburn, Ill./Elburn) rounded out the top five finishers for the Flyers with a 94th place mark of 28:32.77.

   Paradise Valley C.C. won the overall men’s title with 42 points, followed by Pittsburg State (61), Central Missouri (91), Truman State (116), Bellarmine (177), Emporia State (193), Washington (200), Missouri S&T (214), Missouri Southern (246), Lewis (262), SIU Edwardsville (270), William Woods (298), McKendree (329), Fontbonne (417), Kentucky Wesleyan (451) and Hannibal-LaGrange (454).

   Ben Rosario ran unattached and won the overall race with a time of 25:02.60, followed by Pittsburg State’s MJ Hassaballa (25:57.36), Unattached Adam MacDowell (26:02.37), Central Missouri’s Brett Carter (26:15.96) and Paradise Valley’s Jeremy Sudbury (26:21.43).
   Both the Lewis men’s and women’s cross country teams are back in action in two weeks as they will travel to Rolla, Missouri to participate in the 2008 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships on October 25th.
