ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The No. 22 Lewis University women’s volleyball team swept Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Kentucky Wesleyan (25-15, 25-11, 25-12) and non-conference opponent Illinois Institute of Technology (25-16, 25-17, 25-16) on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers out-hit Kentucky Wesleyan .402 to .060 and held a 43-20 edge in kills.

“It was nice to get everyone in and see everyone succeed,” head coach Lorelee Smith said of getting 11 Flyers into the match.

Freshman Colleen Mitros (Mokena, Ill./Providence) hit .455 with a match-high 12 kills and two aces. Fellow freshman Hannah Koeneman (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) had her best match as a Flyer, hitting a perfect 1.000 with six kills. She also added an ace and two block assists. Freshman Katie Crawford (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) tallied a career-high 25 kills. Freshman Faith Watson (Oregon, Ill./Oregon) had four kills.

“Faith had an all around solid day, in both front and back row,” Smith said.

Senior Lauren Hatter (Avon, Ind./Avon) recorded 17 digs. She took the libero jersey off in the third set and notched three kills and two block assists. Junior Kim Richards (Evergreen Park, Ill./Mother McAuley) had eight kills in two sets.

It was a match of runs for Lewis. They had runs of five and four points in set one. The Flyers then opened set two with a 7-0 run and had a 7-1 run in set three.

The Flyers continued to exceptionally well against IIT, out-hitting the Scarlet Hawks .361 to .071. In the opening set the Flyers hit .500 with 19 kills and only three errors. Set two was tight, but the Flyers finished on a 7-0 run to win by eight. Another 7-0 run in set three extended a two-point Lewis advantage into a 21-12 lead.

“I’m proud of the whole team against IIT because they came out fired up and sometimes when playing two matches in the same day it is difficult to have that much energy,” Smith said.

Richards drilled 11 kills on 15 swings to hit .600. Sophomore Rachel Ruedi (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet Seymour) had 37 assists.

“Kim and Rachel were connecting today,” Smith said. “It is one of the first times in a few matches that they found that connection.”

Junior Stephanie Sagat (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) added 12 kills. Mitros added six kills while Mount had five.

“Stephanie was good all three matches this weekend” Smith said. “Both front row and back row, she played very well.”

The Flyers improve to 24-5 (12-0 GLVC) and have won 21 straight matches at home dating back to last season. Lewis finishes the regular season with six conference matches. Northern Kentucky’s loss to Indianapolis on Saturday gives the Flyers a two-match advantage in the loss column over Northern Kentucky in the GLVC East. The Flyers are at Saint Joseph’s on Tuesday.
