SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH. - The Lewis University women's basketball team opened the 2008-09 campaign with a 74-54 setback at Lake Superior State on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) led the Flyers with 12 points and four rebounds. Junior Christine Karl (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) came off the bench to add nine points.

The Flyers' only lead came on a Carbaugh layup to start the game. The Lakers built an early 13 point lead only to see the Flyers cut it to seven on a jumper by junior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) with 4:25 left in the first. The Flyers opened the second half by cutting the Lakers' 10-point halftime lead to eight on a jumper by sophomore Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton). Currin finished with four assists. The Lakers controlled the rest of the second half to take the game.

The Lakers, who won three contests in Florida last weekend, improve to 4-0. Lewis falls to 0-1. The Flyers play Michigan Tech at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.
