Kansas City, Mo. - The third time was not the charm.

For the third consecutive match, the #16 Lewis University men's soccer team went to a shootout after battling to a scoreless tie over the first 110:00 minutes. The Flyers split both of those matches, but unfortunately came out on the short end against #10 Northern Kentucky.

The Flyers were unable to solve Northern Kentucky goalkeeper Michael Lavric, as the Norse won the shootout, 4-3, to claim the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional championship at Rockhurst's Bourke Field on Sunday afternoon.

Lewis ends their season with a record of 14-1-4, while Northern Kentucky advances to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals with a mark of 16-2-3.

In the shootout, the Flyers took an early 2-1 lead behind scores from Cory Mastey (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and Mardoche Beya (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and an Anthony Szymel (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) save of a Mike Jonca attempt.

Lavric, however, was up to the task, as he stoned both Nestor Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) and Charlie Bucio (Chicago, Ill./Juarez). Northern Kentucky midfielder and Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year Steven Beattie scored after Hernandez's miss and Tony Ray clinched the match after Bucio's miss.

Following the match, Szymel was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Defensive Player after not allowing a single goal in 220 minutes of work. Szymel, Mastey, Hernandez and Kipp Cartwright (Park Forest, Ill./Marian Catholic) were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

A Catholic University sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The mid-sized university is being honored for the fifth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
