Lewis 89, St. Francis 44 in PDF Format
Romeoville, Ill. – With three of their first four games of the season decided by less than four points, the Lewis University men’s basketball team needed a good tune-up heading into the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference campaign.
St. Francis (IL) provided that opportunity for the Flyers, as Lewis scored 33 points off of 20 Saints turnovers on their way to the 89-44 non-conference victory at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday night.
“It was our best defensive effort of the year,” Lewis University head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost said. “We set the tone early, played aggressive and it carried over into the second half. We anticipated well and it led to some easy baskets in transition.
“We got some offense out of our defense.”
With the victory, Lewis improves to 4-1 on the season, while the Saints drop to 4-5 on the campaign.
Lewis senior guard Brandon Dagans (Harvey, Ill./Thornton) topped the Flyers with 15 points, while backcourt mate Dennis Thomas (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) added 14 points, six assists and no turnovers. Senior forward Jason Genova (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick/Saint Xavier) added 13 points, including three trifectas.
The Flyers dominated inside as well, as Lewis posted 44 points in the paint as opposed to USF’s 14.
St. Francis forward Rob Rabenau led the Saints with 14 points.
Lewis opens up Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Thursday (Dec. 4) night, as the Flyers host Southern Indiana for a 7:45 p.m. tip-off at Neil Carey Arena.
