TUNICA, Miss. -
Late-inning homers spoiled a pair of solid pitching performances for the Lewis University softball team in losses to Southern Arkansas (4-3) and No. 14 Alabama-Huntsville (4-1), Friday in the Flyers' first two games of the season, played at a weekend tournament hosted by Delta State University.
The Flyers held a 2-0 lead over Southern Arkansas, getting both runs in the first inning. Senior Carla Musillo and junior Courtney Lyons each tallied RBI singles in the frame.
The lead stood until the third when Southern Arkansas rallied to tie the game.
Lewis regained the lead in the fourth when freshman Kayla Smith led off with a triple and scored on junior Michelle Yudy's squeeze bunt, but a sixth-inning homer by the Muleriders No. 9 hitter ended up being the difference.
Lyons (0-1) pitched 5 and 2/3 innings, yielding four hits while striking out four.
Against No. 14 Alabama-Huntsville, who had defeated Indianapolis 15-0 earlier in the day, the Flyers fell behind 1-0 but rallied in the sixth to tie the game. Junior Lisa Gartland singled to open the inning and was later brought home with a single from sophomore Brittany DiPietro.
Unfortunately for Lewis, the Chargers received a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to take the lead for good.
Junior Julie Wingerter took a no-decision in the game after pitching 4 and 1/3 innings of four-hit ball. She struck out eight batters.
The Flyers (0-2) look to rebound on Saturday, playing Arkansas-Monticello at Noon and Delta State at 4 pm.
