LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
Behind complete-game efforts by junior Courtney Lyons and freshman Diana Pickrum, the Lewis Flyers pounded out 19 hits and scored 15 runs in a 10-2 and 5-0 doubleheader sweep of Bellarmine, Friday afternoon in conference play.
The games were originally scheduled to be played at Lewis, but inclement weather moved the games to Bellarmine. Lewis was treated as the home team on the scoreboard.
In game one, the Flyers scored five in the first and four in the second to quickly put the game out of reach. Juniors Carissa Castonzo and Lisa Gartland each recorded three RBI in the win. Castonzo was 3-for-3 with two singles and a double, while Gartland collected two hits, including a three-run home run in the second.
Lyons (10-3) yielded just four hits while striking out six to pick up her eighth complete game of the season.
Junior Kelly Dianis, who went 3-for-5 in the two games, provided the big blow in game two, belting a three-run homer in the third. It was her first long ball of the season, putting her two behind the Lewis career record.
Pickrum (3-0) was masterful in the circle, holding the Knights to only two hits. It was the first complete-game and shutout of her career.
Senior Mallory Paine and freshman Kayla Smith also had big days at the plate. Paine went 4-for-7 with two doubles and three runs scored, while Smith was 3-for-7 with a triple and a double.
The Flyers (16-8), winners of seven straight, return to action on Saturday at Northern Kentucky.
