WINONA, Minn. -
Senior Carla Musillo hit two home runs as the Flyers beat Winona State 3-2 in eight innings and fell to St. Cloud State 8-5, Saturday afternoon at the Winona State Tournament at Maxwell Field.
Lewis (19-9) was trailing 2-0 against Winona State when Musillo belted her first home run. The line-drive solo shot rocketed over the fence in left field in Lewis' fourth.
The Flyers tied the game in the same inning when junior Kelly Dianis scored from second on a passed ball. With two out, junior Carissa Castonzo struck out on a high pitch but bolted for first when the ball got past the catcher. Dianis advanced to third on the passed ball and then headed home when the catcher tried to gun down Castonzo at first.
Junior Courtney Lyons hit home Lewis' go-ahead run in the eighth on a fielder's choice. Using the international tie-breaker rule, Lewis started the inning with sophomore Lexie Vernon placed on second. Junior Jessica Beck bunted Vernon to third, and then Lyons hit a grounder to the left side. Winona's shortstop fired home but not in time.
Freshman Diana Pickrum (5-0) earned the complete-game win. She gave up Winona's two runs in the first, but only allowed two hits the rest of the way.
Against St. Cloud State, the Flyers again fell behind 2-0 after the first inning but then came right back in the second.
After Dianis and freshman Stephanie Harmon reached to start the inning, freshman Stephanie Trapped doubled them both in to tie the game. Trapp wound up on third on the play and later scored on a passed ball.
St. Cloud State responded with a run in the top of the third, but Musillo answered with an inside the park home run in the bottom half to put Lewis back in front. Unfortunately for Lewis, the lead didn't last.
St. Cloud State added one more in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth and seventh to seal the win.
The Flyers return to action in the Winona State Tournament on Sunday, facing St. Cloud State and Wisconsin-Parkside.
