UCLA Defeats Lewis In Four

LOS ANGELES - Junior Drew Pickering hit .478 and notched 13 kills but the Flyers were tripped by No. 10 UCLA 3-1 (30-27, 23-30, 30-25, 30-24) in a non-conference match.

Lewis jumped out to a 10-5 lead thanks to a 5-2 run but the Bruins chipped away at the Flyers' advantage. With Lewis up 20-17, the Bruins went on a 6-0 run and grabbed a 3-point lead. The Flyers got within two, but the Bruins eventually took the game by three points.

Game two was all Lewis, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. The Flyers out-hit the Bruins .435 to .111 and sophomore setter Mike Iandolo had two kills on the Flyers' final three points. The Flyers held an eight-point lead on five occasions during the game.

Game three was the opposite for Lewis, with the Bruins jumping out to a quick 14-7 advantage. The Flyers never led but got within three at 28-25.

In game four it looked the Flyers may be breaking through when they grabbed an 11-10 advantage on a Garrett Muagututia attack error after kills by senior Jared Dayton and sophomore Nathan Klaas. But a 6-1 run by the Bruins gave UCLA an advantage they would never relinquish.

The Flyers were out-blocked (10.0-9.5) for only the third time this season. The Bruins also out-hit the Flyers .393 to .255. Dayton finished with 13 kills and eight digs. Juniors Billy Sahagian and Alex Vigansky each had eight kills. Iandolo finished with 48 assists, five digs and one solo block. Junior Nick Perakes totaled 12 digs. For UCLA, Sean O'Malley had a match-high 23 kills.

The Bruins improve to 11-9 while the Flyers fall to 11-6. Lewis is at USC tomorrow.
