Junior Alex Vigansky notched 14 kills with no errors, but the No. 15 Flyers were defeated by No. 8 Ball State 3-1 (30-24, 30-23, 27-30, 30-24) on Saturday evening in a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match.
Junior Drew Pickering added 18 kills while senior Jared Dayton had 16. Sophomore setter Mike Iandolo recorded 62 assists and six digs. Junior David Kelnhofer added nine kills and four digs in three games of action. Senior David Kyner recorded two kills and an assisted block. Both Dayton and Kyner were honored as part of senior night at Neil Carey Arena.
In game one, a 4-1 Cardinals run turned a six all opening game into a three-point Cardinals advantage. Ball State never looked back. Game two was closer, with the game tied 10 times and the lead changing on five occasions. But with the score tied at 15 the Cardinals went on a 6-2 run and grabbed a four-point advantage to propel them to victory.
The Flyers used a 3-0 run with the score tied at 22 to pull away on their way to the game three victory. Lewis fell behind 15-9 in game four, but rallied to tie it at 17. But unfortunately for the Flyers Ball State finished strong to take the final game and the victory.
Patrick Durbin had a match high 19 kills for Ball State (19-9, 10-2 MIVA).
The Flyers (20-9, 7-5 MIVA) hold the No. 3 spot in the MIVA and will host Mercyhurst in a MIVA Tournament First Round Match on Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m.
