ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -
An overtime goal by junior Charlie Bucio gave the No. 10 Lewis Flyers a 1-0 victory over Bellarmine in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both schools.
The Flyers controlled the pace of the match, holding a 19-11 edge in shots. It wasn't until the final two minutes of the first overtime that the Flyers found the back of the net. A cross from senior Cory Mastey from the right side found Bucio in a crowd just to the left of the net. Bucio emerged from the pack and headed the ball in for the Lewis win.
It looked like the Flyers had taken a 1-0 lead late in the first half. With two minutes left the Bellarmine goalkeeper made a save on a Mastey shot but couldn't control the rebound. Sophomore Mardoche Beya burst forward to beat the fallen keeper, but Lewis was called for offsides and the game went to the half tied.
Five minutes into the second half Beya was close to putting the Flyers ahead again. This time it was a header that hit the crossbar.
Bellarmine was not without their chances though. With 29 minutes left Bradley Barraclough tried to go high on Lewis keeper senior Anthony Szymel. But Szymel came up with the jumping one handed save to deflect the ball over the crossbar and keep the game scoreless.
Szymel, who has yet to be scored on in four matches, was impressive again. He finished with five saves. De Jesus had six shots, two on goal. Mastey took four shots, two on goal.
The Flyers improve to 4-0 (1-0 GLVC) while Bellarmine is now 2-2-1 (1-0 GLVC). Lewis hosts No. 1 Northern Kentucky on Sunday at noon.
