Romeoville, Ill. – Every once in awhile, the ball happens to bounce your way.
In the case of the Lewis University men’s soccer team, it bounced their way and into the back of the UW-Parkside net, as the Flyers picked up the 5-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Rangers at the Lewis University Soccer Field on Friday afternoon.
“It was one of those games that does not happen very often,” Lewis head men’s soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. “Defensively we tried to do some things that we didn’t do in the last two games. We tried to limit the restarts, but at the same time offensively, we tried to the stuff we’ve been talking about working on.
“We were finally able to do that against a good team.”
With the victory, Lewis improves to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in GLVC play, while the Rangers drop to 4-2-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in conference action.
Five different Flyers scored, including: Mardoche Beya (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton), Nestor Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West), Joey De Francesco (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park), Armin Vrebac (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) and Charlie Bucio (Chicago, Ill./Juarez). Bucio also added an assist for the Flyers.
UW-Parkside managed four shots for the afternoon, and just one shot on goal, giving Lewis senior goalkeeper Anthony Szymel (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) his sixth victory of the season and fourth shutout overall.
Lewis is back in action on Sunday afternoon, as the Flyers host Truman State for a non-conference showdown at Lewis University Soccer field at 12 p.m.
