ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Senior Drew Pickering (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa West) swung 14 times and recorded 12 kills for a .857 hitting percentage to lead the No. 12 Flyers to a 3-0 (30-20, 30-19, 30-18) victory over Carthage College in a non-conference match on Wednesday evening at Neil Carey Arena.
The Flyers hit .512 for the match, never falling below .500 in any of the three sets. Pickering recorded six kills in sets one and two before sitting out the final set.
"Drew was awesome tonight," head coach Dan Friend said. "He was crowd pleaser."
The Flyers led 7-6 when they went on a 6-2 run to take hold of the opening set. Carthage didn't score two consecutive points in the second until they made it a 13-7 score, by then the Flyers were well in control. With many of the Lewis reserves on the court, the Flyers finished off the match with an 11-4 run midway through the third set.
Junior Nathan Klaas (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) hit .400 with nine kills, in two sets of work. Junior Craig Boller (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) and freshman Gustavo Cintron (Delray Beach, Fla./Spanish River) each had six kills. Junior Mike Iandolo (Orlando, Fla./Long Beach State) had 27 assists. Junior Andy Frontz (El Cajon, Calif./Grossmont CC) had 13.
"The whole team played great offensively," Friend said. "It was great to see that high level continue when the second team guys came in."
Randy Hansen led Carthage with 14 kills. Carthage falls to 2-4. The Flyers improve to 2-1. Lewis hosts Lindenwood on Friday at 7 p.m.
