RENSSELAER, Ind. - The Lewis women's basketball team fended off a second half rally by Saint Joseph's to win 62-55 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest on Thursday evening.

Sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 boards, eight offensive. Freshman Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) finished with 10 points and nine boards, going 8-for-8 from the line.

The Flyers shot only 21-of-60 (35 percent) from the floor, and 6-of-25 from long range.

"We didn't shoot the ball well," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "Plus we weren't overly aggressive on the defensive end. They got some good shots and knocked them down."

The Pumas started the second on a 14-4 run to turn a 32-23 Lewis halftime lead into a one-point Pumas advantage with 13:28 left. Junior Amy Smith (Southgate, Mich./Anderson) responded with her only bucket of the game to start a back and forth stretch.

Erica Jiles made a layup to give the Pumas a 48-44 advantage with 8:20 remaining. A jumper by senior Jenna Mooberry (Byron, Ill./Byron) and two free throws by sophomore Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) knotted it up. Saint Joseph's held a three-point lead when Monaco drained a trey to tie it back up at 51 with 5:57 remaining. From then on the Flyers took control. Lewis made it 57-53 when Turpel finished in the lane on a feed from Mooberry. It was the same score when sophomore Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) made a jumper out of a timeout with 58 seconds left to put the contest away.

Currin finished with 11 points, five boards, five assists and no turnovers. Monaco had 10 points

"We didn't play well, but if you can play poorly and get a road win you'll take it," Carlsen said.

The Flyers improve to 8-9 (4-4 GLVC). Saint Joseph's is 0-17 (0-9 GLVC). Lewis is back in action on Saturday against Indianapolis at 4:30 p.m. CT.
