Men's Soccer: Lewis 1, #8 Truman State 0 in PDF Format
Kirksville, Mo. - The bigger they are, the harder they fall.
For the third time in as many chances this month, the Lewis University men's soccer team has defeated a ranked opponent, as the Flyers claimed the 1-0 non-conference road victory over #8 Truman State at the Truman State Soccer Pitch on Wednesday afternoon.
Lewis had previously defeated then #11 Northern Kentucky (1-0, Oct. 2) and then #22 UW-Parkside (2-0, Oct. 11) this month.
"Every game is crucial for us to compete in the postseason," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "We need to be playing our best ball towards the end of the season for a chance to compete for a championship. I'm very happy to pick up a road win against a good team on a pretty wet field today."
With the victory, Lewis improves to 10-3-1, while the Bulldogs drop to 9-2-1 overall. Lewis, who has won nine of their last 10 contests, has now won at least 10 games in 18 straight seasons.
Lewis senior forward Charlie Bucio (Chicago, Ill./Juarez) scored the game-winning, unassisted goal at the 37 minute mark with a blast past Bulldogs' goalkeeper Tyler Knierim. Bucio now has four goals on the season.
Lewis freshman goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) made six stops in goal for his eighth shutout of the season.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 18) afternoon, as they head to the state capital to square off with Illinois-Springfield for a 2:30 start.
A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 10th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
