Romeoville, Ill. - Lewis University senior forward Nestor Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) posted his team-leading seventh goal of the season at the 65:32 mark to help the Flyers men's soccer team to the 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over No. 11 Northern Kentucky at the Lewis Soccer Field on Friday afternoon.

The winning goal was scored on a set play just outside of the goal box on the left hand side, as Nathan Groesch (Decatur, Ill./MacArthur/Bradley) sent a long pass to Hernandez in front of the net and converted for the score.

With the victory, Lewis improves to 6-3-1 overall and 5-3 in GLVC action, while the Norse drops to 8-2-1 on the campaign and 5-2 in conference play. The win also extends the Flyers' home unbeaten streak to 18 games.

"I thought we played a smart game today," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "We took care of the ball and did some things that we've been harping on. But you know what? It's just one game, we have to come back and battle Sunday (against Indianapolis). This can't be just a one-shot deal, because we just have to keep getting better."

Lewis freshman goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) made three saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season. NKU keeper Michael Lavric made five saves on the afternoon.

The Flyers return to action on Sunday afternoon, as they welcome Indianapolis for a 2:30 p.m. first kick.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 10th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
