ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - No. 21 Lewis and Rockhurst played to a scoreless tie for 80 minutes. However a late goal by junior Jose Ibarra (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) gave the Flyers the only score they would need as the Flyers topped the Hawks 1-0.
Ibarra pounded the ball in from a crowded box at 80:23. Seniors Nestor Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) and Alex Koprowski (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) assisted on the goal.
"Today was a good test," head coach Evan Fiffles said. "They're a good team but we sharpened things up during the final third of the game. Defensively we did well limiting them to just two shots and then we poked one in."
The Flyers held a dominating 15-7 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Junior Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) made two saves to record his ninth shutout of the season.
Rockhurst falls to 8-10 and 6-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Lewis improves to 12-3-1 (10-3 GLVC). The Flyers have earned the No. 3 seed in the GLVC Tournament and will host No. 6 Quincy in the first round next weekend.
A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 10th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
