Springfield, Mo. - The last time that the #14 Lewis University men's soccer team and Northern Kentucky battled on the pitch in the postseason, the Norse advanced in the NCAA Regionals with a 4-3 shootout win after battling to a 0-0 double-overtime tie last season.
The circumstances were eerily similar on Friday evening as the Norse claimed the 4-2 shootout victory over the Flyers after a scoreless 110 minutes to advance to the Great Lakes Valley Conference finals at Drury's Harrison Stadium.
Northern Kentucky moves to 15-4-2 on the campaign while the Flyers extend their unbeaten streak to nine games and go to 13-3-2 on the season. Lewis now awaits word on a possible berth in the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Flyer goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) tied a season-high with 10 saves on the evening and extended his shutout streak to six straight contests, while NKU keeper Michael Lavric made eight stops on the night.
Northern Kentucky's Braden Bishop and Alex Oeswein each converted their penalty kick attempts, while the Flyers missed both of their tries to give the Norse a commanding 2-0 advantage.
Following a miss by GLVC Offensive Player of the Year, Steven Beattie, while Lewis freshman Robert McGowan (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) answered with a score of his own, cutting NKU's lead to 2-1.
NKU's Chris Dobrowolski knocked his attempt past Kieruzal, while Flyer reserve Jose Lopez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) poked his PK past Lavric, bringing the score to 3-2.
Northern Kentucky ended the shootout with a Stephen McGill score.
