ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Sophomore Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) made four of the Flyers' season-high 12 3-pointers to help the Lewis women's basketball team defeat Saint Joseph's 83-58 on Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup.
Monaco finished with a career-high 24 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Freshman Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) added 18 points, including two early treys, helping the Flyers make nine 3-pointers in the first half alone. Lewis dominated the opening half, shooting 62.1 percent to lead 46-22 at the break.
"Devon did a nice job making good reads and finishing," head coach Lisa Carlsen said.
Sophomore Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) hit double-digits for the 21st straight game, adding 11 points, eight boards, six assists and two blocks. Senior Jenna Mooberry (Byron, Ill./Byron) continued her recent trend of quality rebounding by grabbing eight boards. Junior Amy Smith (Southgate, Mich./Anderson) had eight boards and seven points off the bench. The two helped Lewis win the rebounding battle 44-31.
"All of our bench players in the last couple weeks especially have stepped in and done nice things for us," Carlsen said.
The Flyers had 23 assists to Saint Joseph's nine. All nine Flyers scored at least three points.
Lewis improves to 13-10 (9-5 GLVC), tying last season's overall and conference win total. The victory is also the Flyers sixth in the last seven games.
Britney Cruse led the Pumas with 12 points. Saint Joseph's falls to 0-24 (0-15 GLVC).
The Flyers are at Bellarmine on Thursday for a 4:45 CT tip.
