Huntsville, Ala. - With temperatures near 30 degrees, the bats for the No. 13 Lewis University softball team were just as cold, as the Flyers managed just seven hits in two games, dropping contests to both West Florida (4-0) and North Alabama (6-1) in second day action at the UAH Charger Chillout, hosted by Alabama-Huntsville, at Wilson Morgan Park on Saturday afternoon.
"Everyone is throwing their No. 1 pitcher against us," Lewis University head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "We have to prepare ourselves to see them and compete at the highest level. We just didn't play well today, but tomorrow is another day."
In the opener, freshman hurler Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) was tagged with the loss, dropping to 2-1 on the season, as she allowed four runs in six innings while walking five and striking out two batters.
UWF catcher Kristee Wheeler provided the crushing blow for the Argos against Habel in the fifth inning with a two-run homer. UWF hurler Jillian Lafrance claimed the complete-game victory, scattering five hits and striking out nine Lewis batters.
In the second game against North Alabama, sophomore third baseman Stephanie Trapp (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) provided the only offensive blow for the Flyers with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.
DiMatteo cited the performance of senior pitcher Julie Wingerter (Channahon, Ill./Minooka). Wingerter (1-1) allowed just three hits in five innings of work, while striking out six batters. UNA's Jennifer Sexton earned the complete-game victory for the Lions, allowing just two hits and striking out six batters.
Lewis finishes the tournament against Wayne State at 9 a.m. on Sunday, followed by host Alabama-Huntsville at 11 a.m.
