ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - No. 12 Lewis University men's volleyball swept non-conference foe Saint Francis (PA) 30-23, 30-27, 30-18 on Sunday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers held decisive advantages in digs (37-21) and hitting percentage (.385-196).
Senior Nick Perakes (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek) had a match-high 11 digs.
"Nick not only got the digs but he set us up so we could get some good swings," head coach Dan Friend said. "As a team, I think we did one of the best jobs so far of executing our defensive game plan,"
The Flyers pulled away in the opening set thanks to two streaks of five straight points.
Lewis led 18-12 in the second set, only to see the Red Flash advance within one point on two separate occasions. Senior Billy Sahagian (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) and Drew Pickering (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa West) tallied back-to-back kills to make it 27-24 and swing the momentum back towards the Flyers.
The third set was all Lewis, running out to a 15-4 advantage by the time Saint Francis had exhausted both timeouts.
Junior Mike Iandolo (Orlando, Fla./Long Beach State) tallied 41 assists, three aces and four block assists. He helped three Flyers record double-digit kills. Junior Nathan Klaas (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had 13 kills and five digs. Sahagian added 10 kills, three block assists and two digs. Senior Drew Pickering (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa West) recorded 10 kills and four digs. Senior David Kelnhofer (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) finished with seven kills and six digs.
The seventh straight victory matches Friend's longest streak as head coach of the Flyers.
The Red Flash fall to 7-7. Lewis improves to 10-2. The Flyers plays at defending champion Penn State on Friday.
