ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Junior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton) had two RBI on the day, but Bellarmine defeated Lewis 7-1 and 4-2 in a Sunday Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Brennan Field.

Lewis took a 2-1 lead in the second game thanks to two runs in the third inning. Sophomore Mike Vucsko (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist) reached on an error and advanced to third thanks to a double by freshman Carmen Anello (Homer Glen, Ill./Brother Rice) that fell just within the right field foul line. Householder grounded out to score Vucsko and tie the game at one. Senior Tim Bingham (Plainfield, Ill./Westland, Mi./John Glenn) singled to right center with two outs to score Anello.

The Knights took the lead right back with two unearned runs in the fourth. Bellarmine added one in the eighth to make the final 4-2.

"Give Bellarmine credit it seemed every time we scored this weekend they answered back," head coach Tim McDonough said.

The Flyers had a runner on base in each of the final three innings but couldn't get him to third in either of the innings. Three of the Knights' four runs were unearned on five Lewis errors.

"What it came down to is you need to take care of the little things to be successful," McDonough said. "But the silver lining is all of those mistakes are fixable and can be worked on."

Freshman Don Cizek (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons) allowed four hits and one earned run in five innings. Cizek's record falls to 0-2. Freshman Drew Hicks (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) and junior Ted Bartnik (Diamond, Ill./Coal City/Illinois Valley CC) threw four innings of two-hit ball out of the pen, allowing just one unearned run.

Lewis scored their only run of the first game in the first when Householder doubled off the left center field wall. His hit knocked in Anello who got on base with a single and stole second. Anello finished the game with two hits.

Freshman Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) surrendered five earned runs, eight hits and two walks in 6.0 innings of work. Lahey's mark falls to 1-1.

"Our young pitchers have good stuff to compete at this level but they need to learn how to win and do the little things," McDonough said.

Bellarmine improves to 15-9 (5-3 GLVC). Lewis falls to 8-9 (1-3, GLVC). The Flyers play at Upper Iowa in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
