ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - In a match that featured only four lead changes, No. 11 Lewis men's volleyball swept Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association foe Quincy 30-23, 30-22, 30-27 on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena.
Senior Drew Pickering (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa West) recorded a match-high 11 kills with nine digs and four block assists. Freshman Gustavo Cintron (Delray Beach, Fla./Spanish River) added 10 kills on 16 swings in just two sets of action. Senior Alex Vigansky (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) added seven kills on 11 swings.
Lewis never trailed in the opening set thanks to a 9-1 run to start the match. The second set was tied at eight when a 5-1 run gave the Flyers breathing room.
Set three was a different story, but the same result. Lewis fell behind 11-5 and had to fight back to get it close again. With sophomore Brian Schmidt (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park/River Forest) serving, Lewis went on four-point run to cut the Quincy lead to two. A five point run, this time with Pickering serving, gave Lewis the lead at 18-17. The teams traded points, but Pickering recorded a resounding kill to give Lewis a 22-20 lead and force Quincy to ask for time. The break only temporarily halted the Flyers' momentum as they would jump out to a 26-21 lead before holding on to win by three.
"It was a solid win through a group effort tonight," head coach Dan Friend said. "We did a couple different things with the lineup and guys like Gustavo and Alex did a really nice job."
Lewis out-hit Quincy .316 to .115.
Lewis improves to 18-5 (5-1 MIVA). Quincy falls to 17-24 (0-4 MIVA). The Flyers host Rutgers-Newark on Sunday.
