INDIANAPOLIS - Another game, another late rally for the Flyers. Lewis used a six-run seventh inning to defeat Indianapolis 7-4 in the second game of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon. Lewis fell in the opening game 11-1 in eight innings.
It looked like the Flyers were heading to a doubleheader sweep when they entered the top of the seventh trailing 2-1. However the Flyers put runners in scoring position with one out when freshman Cameron Anello (Homer Glen, Ill./Brother Rice) singled and advanced to second on a Greyhounds error. Sophomore Mike Vucsko (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist), who was on first following a fielder's choice, advanced to third. The Greyhounds loaded the bases with an intentional walk to junior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton). It set the stage for senior Chris McCall (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest/College of DuPage CC) to smack a single into right field to tie the game at 2-2. After the ball got away from the catcher Anello tried to score from third but was out on a bang-bang play at the plate for the second out of the inning.
Not satisfied with just the tie, senior Tim Bingham (Plainfield, Ill./Westland, Mi./John Glenn) stepped to the plate and cranked a home run to left center to give Lewis a 5-2 advantage. The Flyers went back-to-back when freshman Michael Wido (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) hit his first collegiate home run over the left field wall. Later in the inning senior Ryan Reynolds (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) scored on a single by senior Ryan Koerner (LeRoy, Ill./LeRoy) to give Lewis their seventh run.
"Typically on the road you get the leadoff man on and you try to play for the win and that's what we did," head coach Tim McDonough said. "Obviously Tim's home run was big but I was really pleased that we kept it going and pushed more across the plate."
The Greyhounds added two in the seventh to make the final 7-4. Junior Joe Scumaci (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence/Triton) improved his record to 3-0 thanks to a seven inning complete game performance. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out seven.
"Joe was great again," McDonough said. "He was able to finish the game after pitching in relief two days ago."
Lewis lost the opening game 11-1. The Flyers got their lone run in the fifth when Koerner singled in Wido with two outs. Koerner has a team-best 20 RBI on the year.
Senior Chris Brigham (Bolingbrook, Ill./Romeoville) took the loss to fall to 2-3.
Indianapolis is now 19-10 (7-3 GLVC). The Flyers are 11-10 (2-4 GLVC). Lewis plays Indianapolis on Saturday in a doubleheader at 10 a.m. CT. First pitch was originally scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
