Highland Heights, Ky. - The offensive struggles for the Lewis University softball team continued on Saturday afternoon, as host Northern Kentucky earned the 5-1, 1-0 (8 inn.) Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over the Flyers at Grein Softball Field.
Lewis has managed just five runs in their last five games.
"That kind of hitting is just not getting it done," Lewis University head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "We're just not getting the hits when we need them."
With the sweep, Northern Kentucky improves to 22-20 overall and 10-10 in GLVC action, while the Flyers drop to 29-16 on the campaign and 11-9 in conference play.
The top of the order for Northern Kentucky provided all the offense that the Norse would need in the first game as shortstop Jessica Farris and first baseman Amanda Smith batted a combined 4-for-6 with five RBI and a run scored. Farris was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Smith was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Lewis starter Courtney Lyons (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro) was tagged with both losses for the Flyers in the doubleheader. Lyons (9-9) allowed four runs and six hits in three innings of work in the opener, while allowing just one run in 7.2 innings of work in the nightcap.
That solo run that Lyons surrendered was a walk-off sacrifice fly from NKU third
baseman Cara Parker in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Lewis senior center fielder Brittany Patete (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) was the offensive leader for the Flyers on the day as she batted a combined 3-for-4.
Lewis returns to action on Tuesday afternoon, as they'll head to Chicago for a non-conference doubleheader against Saint Xavier beginning at 3 p.m.
