HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Junior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton) batted in three runs in the doubleheader opener between Lewis and Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon. Lewis won the first game 9-7 before dropping the second 5-2.
"It's like football. You need at least two of the three components to win a game," head coach Tim McDonough said. "We had pitching and timely hitting in game one but had some issues defensively and were still able to win the game."
The top four batters in the Lewis lineup drove in all seven Lewis runs in game one.
Lewis got on the board in the first with two runs. Senior Chris McCall (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest/College of DuPage CC) bunted to move sophomore Mike Vuckso (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist) and freshman Cameron Anello (Homer Glen, Ill./Brother Rice) into scoring position. Householder followed with a double to score Vucsko and Anello.
The Norse tied it with runs in the first and second. They took a 5-2 with five unearned runs in the fifth.
But back came the Flyers with four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.
McCall singled in a run and Householder used a sacrifice fly to record his third RBI of the game. The Flyers tied it on a wild pitch that scored Anello.
Lewis took the lead sixth with three two-out runs. Vucsko singled to left to score sophomore Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport). Anello followed with a single to score junior Ryan McManaman (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) and Vucsko.
Northern Kentucky added two in the seventh to make the final 9-7.
Junior Joe Scumaci (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence/Triton) earned the victory to improve his record to 5-3. Only one of the Norse's seven runs was earned. He allowed 11 hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Scumaci's fifth win is the most by a Lewis pitcher since 2004.
"Joe threw a lot of pitches and battled today," McDonough said.
Game two was tied at two until Northern Kentucky pushed three runs across in the eighth. All three runs scored with two outs.
Lewis had two on in the ninth but couldn't keep the rally going.
Freshman Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) continues to pitch well but came up short of getting the victory. Lahey (2-6) allowed three runs, just one earned, in 7.1 innings.
"Pat pitched well but they got the big hits and we didn't," McDonough said.
Lewis scored runs in the first and fifth. McCall walked with two outs and scored on a Norse throwing error for Lewis' first run. McManaman led off the fifth with a double and scored on an Anello double play. The run tied up the game after the Norse scored two runs in the first inning.
Northern Kentucky moves to 24-18 (14-10 GLVC). Lewis is 16-22 (4-15 GLVC). The Flyers are at Saint Xavier on Thursday.
