ALLENDALE, Mich. - Freshman Ryan Servos (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) allowed just one unearned run on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts but earned a no decision in the Flyers' 3-1 eight inning game two loss at Grand Valley State on Tuesday afternoon. Lewis fell in the opening game 9-4.
"Ryan kept them off balance, got ahead of hitters and all in all was the best he pitched all year," head coach Tim McDonough said. "Hopefully that's a confidence booster for him and he can continue to grow going into next year."
Servos' only blemish came in the second when the Lakers pushed across an unearned run on a groundball to sophomore Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport) that should have ended the inning. However his wild throw allowed a run to score. Servos limited the damage after the next Laker flew out to end the inning.
Lewis tied it in the sixth thanks to a Lakers' unearned run. Sophomore Ben Stephen (St. Joseph, Mich./Lake Michigan Catholic) took first to lead off the inning thanks to a throwing error by the Lakers' third baseman. He was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior Chris McCall (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest)'s (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest/College of DuPage CC) two-out game tying single knotted the game up.
Freshman Drew Hicks (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) started the sixth on the bump for Lewis and despite some trouble worked a scoreless frame. Junior Ted Bartnik (Diamond, Ill./Coal City/Illinois Valley CC) did the same in the seventh to extend the game to extras.
Stephen singled with an out in the eighth but never advanced to second. With the Flyers' bullpen working their sixth game in four days, sophomore Mike Vucsko (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist) made his first pitching appearance of the season in the eighth. Steve Anderson followed with a two-run home run to give the Lakers the sweep. Vucsko's mark falls to 0-1.
The Lakers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one but left the bases loaded. Lewis cut the lead in half in the second thanks to a leadoff triple by senior Tim Bingham (Plainfield, Ill./Westland, Mi./John Glenn). Forkin followed with an RBI ground out. It stayed 2-1 till the Lakers put three on the board in the third.
Following a 1-2-3 Lewis' sixth inning, Grand Valley put the Flyers away with a four spot in the bottom half. Hicks earned the final two outs after starter freshman Don Cizek (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons) was removed. Cizek (1-5) took the loss, surrendering nine runs on 14 hits in 5.1 innings.
Lewis added three in the seventh on RBIs by Bartnik and freshman Ryan Wischhover (Palos Heights, Ill./Brother Rice). Bartnik then came around on wild pitch for the Flyers' fourth run.
Grand Valley State improves to 35-11-1. Lewis falls to 18-30. The Flyers close out the 2009 season at UW-Parkside with a pair of doubleheaders this weekend.
