Rensselaer, Ind. - The last time that the Lewis won a Great Lakes Valley Conference match was in 2003, and Saint Joseph's was on the other side of the net.
History repeated itself on Tuesday afternoon, as the visiting Flyers claimed the 5-1 GLVC victory over the host Pumas.
"The Cubs are trying to break a 101-year curse and we just broke a six-year curse," Lewis University head women's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. "We have been really bad at times this season and haven't closed out matches, but we can still make something of this season."
With the victory, Lewis improves to 2-13 overall and 1-4 in GLVC action, while the Pumas drop to 9-9 on the campaign and 0-5 in conference play.
Freshmen Uno Lapimaa (Talinn, Estonia/Tallina Audentese Erakooli) and Tonis Irdoja (Tallin, Estonia/Rocca Al Mare) opened the match with an 8-2 win over Brandon Ward and Ishan Gohil at No. 1 doubles. Lapimaa also dropped Gohil at No 1 singles (6-0, 6-0) while Irdoja earned the 6-2, 6-1 win over Ward at No. 2 singles.
Senior Ben Karas (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and freshman Balazs Somogyi (Budapest, Hungary/ Kvassay Jeno Muszaki Szakkozepiskola) claimed the 8-3 win over Kris McNeary and James Smith at No. 2 doubles. Karas also picked up the 6-1, 6-2 victory over Smith at No. 4 singles to clinch the match for the Flyers.
Lewis is back in action on Thursday afternoon, as they travel to St. Louis to square off with Maryville for a 12 p.m. first serve.
