GLVC Tournament: #6 Northern Kentucky 1, #5 Lewis 0 in PDF Format
East Peoria, Ill. - It was a game of who blinked first.
Unfortunately for the Lewis University softball team, it was the Flyers.
Northern Kentucky scored one run in the top of the seventh inning on a passed ball by Lewis junior catcher Brittany DiPietro (Bolingbrook, Ill./Joliet Catholic) to break a scoreless tie and earn the 1-0 victory over the Flyers, snapping their eight-game win streak, and earning a berth into the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Tournament Championship at the EastSide Centre's Mizuno Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Lewis drops to 37-17, while the Norse moves to 30-21 on the season.
Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said that DiPietro and starting pitcher Courtney Lyons (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro) had their signals crossed up on the key play.
Lyons (12-10) was the tough-luck loser for the Flyers as she allowed just five hits and no earned runs while fanning eight batters. NKU starting pitcher April Ehlers earned the complete-game, four-hit shutout and struck out three batters to improve to 17-12 on the campaign.
A Catholic University sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The mid-sized university is being honored for the fifth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report. For more information please visit www.lewisu.edu.
