Romeoville, Ill. - Lewis University's Kipp Cartwight (Park Forest, Ill./Marian Catholic) posted a goal and an assist to help the host Flyers to the 2-0 Great Lakes Conference victory over Missouri-St. Louis and extend their home unbeaten streak to 16 games at Lewis Soccer Field on Friday afternoon.
"We just have to play better each game," Lewis head coach Evan Fiffles said of his squad's performance. "We didn't play particularly well today, but we got the result we wanted. We capitalized on some opportunities and that's all you can ask for."
With the victory, Lewis improves to 3-2-1 overall and 2-2 in GLVC action, while the Tritons drop to 1-2-2 on the season and 1-1-2 in conference play.
Scoreless for much of the game, Cartwright broke the tie at the 68:36 mark when his direct kick deflected off of the Tritons wall set up in front of him and past the outstretched arms of UMSL goalkeeper Tim Boruff.
Lewis senior forward Charlie Bucio (Chicago, Ill./Juarez) added an insurance goal, his second of the season, for the Flyers at the 80:18 mark. Cartwright and junior midfielder Jose Ibarra (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) assisted on the play.
Lewis freshman keeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) made five saves between the pipes to claim his third shutout of the young campaign.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. as they welcome Southern Indiana for a 2:30 p.m. first kick.
