NEWARK, N.J. - No. 14 Lewis cruised to a sweep (30-19, 30-22, 30-23) of the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders on Saturday afternoon at the Golden Dome Classic on the campus of Rutgers-Newark.
Freshman Ian Karbiener (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) hit .533 and led Lewis with 10 kills in just two sets of action. Junior Brian Muesenfechter (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) was the only Flyer to play all three sets. He recorded eight digs, six kills and three blocks. Freshman Chris Biscardi (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) had nine kills, four block assists and four digs in two sets.
Senior Mike Iandolo (Orlando, Fla./Long Beach State) added 29 assists while senior Andy Frontz (El Cajon, Calif./Grossmont CC) had 19 assists.
Lewis out-hit NJIT .615 to .281 in the first set. The second stanza was highlighted by a pair of 5-0 runs by Lewis. Lewis had just a one-point lead in the third set at 11-10 when the Flyers scored nine of the next 11 points. Junior Brian Schmidt (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) had three of his six kills in the stretch.
"We got to play everybody which was great because after a five gamer it is easy to be gassed," head coach Dan Friend said. "I think overall the team as a group had high energy which is important in the second of two consecutive matches."
Christen Puszies paced NJIT with 11 kills.
The Flyers face Carthage on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before hosting traditional power Penn State on Friday at 7 p.m.
